When we ask the question, What is meant when the Bible speaks of Christian ministry or ministers? Does it have in mind a specific function or office?
According to the Zondervan Encyclopedia of Bible Words:
"The word minister is used of persons who give personal service to a ruler, particularly of those who are set aside to perform some special service in the worship of God...
It was Jesus Himself who set both the tone and the example for such Christian ministry. He called the disciples to find greatness through servanthood," ... just as the Son of man did not come to be served but to serve, and give His life as a ransom for many" (Mt 20:28)."
Whether viewing the office or function, it can be seen that a Christian Ministry is supposed to operate within the guidelines established by Christ Himself in the Bible. One of service to others and not to self.
